Who We Are:
Miskanawah (meaning “many little paths” in Cree) is an Indigenous-led charitable organization, grounded in cultural traditions and teachings, and has operated in Calgary for over 35 years. Miskanawah is a multi-service organization, offering programs and services in the areas of family support (ranging from prevention and early intervention to intervention), youth services, clinical and cultural mental health supports, crisis support, housing support, and cultural and ceremonial supports.
Guided by Indigenous teachings, Miskanawah offers culturally based, supportive services to people in the Calgary area as they strengthen their circles of self, family, community, and culture. All Miskanawah programs and offerings are rooted in the concept of Wahkotiwin (Cree for 'living in relationship'). By working in alignment with Wahkotiwin, Miskanawah creates a stronger sense of community and inclusion, becoming more than an agency people can access or are referred to for services. Miskanawah becomes a community stream within itself, where those who choose to engage can Miskamaso (Cree for 'discover for yourself') a Wahkotiwin journey. The intent is to develop a sense of community for families in an environment of belonging and cultural safety, where the hopes and aspirations of individuals, families and children are encouraged and supported.
Guided by the traditional teachings embedded within Wahkotiwin (Cree Natural Law of interconnection and kinship), our relationships and connections with those we serve are the foundation for the services we provide.
As Miskanawah continues to build relatives in community, we have become a leading resource for Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members wishing to create ethical space between Indigenous and non-Indigenous world views, and further their Reconciliation efforts. We understand that true Reconciliation involves experiential learning by all communities, in an environment that welcomes collaboration, intergenerational knowledge sharing, and collective accountability. Miskanawah welcomes relatives from diverse backgrounds to strengthen cultural capacity building and Reconciliation within the Moh’Kinsstis community.
Miskanawah is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina; and the Iyarhe Nakoda Nations of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Good Stoney. We acknowledge that this territory is also home to the Otipemisiwak Métis Government of the Métis Nation of Alberta Districts 5 & 6. Finally, we acknowledge all Nations – Indigenous and non – who live on this land, and who honour and celebrate this territory.
Miskanawah offers services to children, youth, and families within the City of Calgary, which is located on land adjacent to where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Moh'kinstsis”.
